The GROW Model

A simple structure for any coaching conversation. Use it with a colleague, a mentee, or yourself.

G

Goal

Define what you want to achieve

  • What would success look like for you in this situation?
  • What’s really important to you about resolving this?
  • If this went well, what would be different a month from now?
  • What do you want to walk away with today?
  • How will you know you’re making progress?

R

Reality

Assess the current situation

  • What’s happening right now?
  • What have you already tried, and what happened?
  • What’s in your control here?
  • How would the other person describe this?
  • What’s getting in the way?

O

Options

Explore possible actions

  • What approaches haven’t you fully considered?
  • What would you suggest to a colleague in your position?
  • If time weren’t a constraint, what would you do?
  • What’s one small thing that could shift this?
  • Which option feels most right to you, and why?

W

Way Forward

Decide on actionable steps

  • What’s one concrete step you could take this week?
  • When will you do it?
  • What support do you need, and from whom?
  • What might get in the way, and how will you handle it?
  • On a scale of 1 to 10, how committed are you to that step?
